As a Mechanical Engineering student at George Mason University, you'll learn how to design and analyze mechanical and thermal systems.
Mechanical engineers research, design, develop, build, and test critical mechanical devices, including tools, engines, sensors, and safety equipment. They have skills that are crucial in a wide range of fields, such as aerospace, automotive, biotechnology, computers, construction, consumer products, energy, electronics, government, nano-technology, and robotics.
In collaboration with the Office of Naval Research, the Naval Erosion Testing (NET) team builds an apparatus that could test for erosion of materials giving us an affordable and fast way of testing these materials.
Amazing Location
Located near Washington, D.C., the Department of Mechanical Engineering grants students access to internships, jobs, research, and entertainment. Our students work with private companies, such as Micron Technology, Vulcan Materials, and Vision Point Systems, and develop relationships with industry and government agencies throughout the D.C. metro area.
Students have direct access to the nation’s capital by taking our free shuttles to the Metro. They can also visit world-class museums, attend live theater and concerts, or become a fan of one of the local sports teams. There are three major airports in the region: Dulles International, Ronald Reagan Washington National, and Baltimore Washington International, as well as access to trains at Union Station in Washington and Alexandria.
Build the Tools that Shape the Future
The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers an ABET-accredited bachelor of science in mechanical engineering, as well as a minor in mechanical engineering. George Mason Engineering also has a PhD in Information Technology with a mechanical engineering concentration, which is designed for students who want to do research in a number of broad areas associated with mechanical engineering.
Our students take classes at the Fairfax Campus and the Science and Technology Campus where they learn in new classrooms, state-of-the-art research centers and laboratories, and senior design spaces. Our courses, taught by world-class faculty members, emphasize mechanics, thermodynamics, materials science, systems control, and mechatronics.
