The Department of Mechanical Engineering has grown into a thriving academic community with hundreds of students, ABET-accredited programs, and an expanding portfolio of research and graduate opportunities. As the broadest of the engineering disciplines, the department equips students with strong technical foundations and practical experience through interdisciplinary research, industry partnerships, and state-of-the-art facilities, including the Life Sciences and Engineering Building at George Mason's SciTech Campus. Building on its history of rapid growth and innovation, the department continues to expand its expertise in areas such as robotics, advanced manufacturing, materials, energy systems, and artificial intelligence, preparing graduates to address complex engineering challenges and empowering versatile mechanical engineers to develop innovative solutions that benefit industry, communities, and society.
